Big thanks to Mike Strickland and David Haak for inviting me to share our work for the Dept. of Biological Sciences Ecological and Evolutionary Biology Seminar Series at Virginia Tech. Seminar title: "Managing microbiomes to enhance and restore ecosystem services." It was a great day of fun science conversation with faculty and students at VT. It was a great time of year to be in Blacksburg, VA.
Congratulations to Gina Bledsoe on receiving the 2016 NC Sea Grant/Water Resources Research Institute Fellowship! Gina is examining how constructed stormwater wetland design and management impact microbial communities and functions related to water quality and greenhouse gas production. The study is taking place at ECU’s Constructed Stormwater Wetland that is adjacent to the Belk Building parking lot on campus.
Gina took these photos of the constructed stormwater wetland during and after the heavy rains. Flood control ...check. Nutrient and pollutant removal...stay tuned! Gina and undergrads Sam and Corey are examining nitrogen removal capacity and greenhouse gas production at this site. Photo credit: Gina Bledsoe We're all thankful that ECU and Greenville made it through Hurricane Matthew rains and flooding. Our thoughts are with our Pirate Community and other eastern NC residents still dealing with the aftermath of the floods. Photo credit: Gina Bledsoe.
Because of the amazing group effort, WRC 2016 sampling and soil processing was a success! Thanks to Gina for leading the charge. Thanks to all the team for fitting in field work and sample processing during a busy week. And good thing this was all done before the hurricane hit!
