Thanks to Ms. Dail Berry and her science students at Lake Mattamuskeet Early College High School for welcoming us into their classroom! Alex and I had a blast talking about the human microbiome and teaching students about the diversity and functions of microbes in general. Thanks to NC Science Festival Invite-A-Scientist Program for pairing us up with Ms. Berry's class! We hope to be back next year!
Gina, Brian, and Corey present posters on their work at the conference. Gina presented new work on hydrology impacts on microbial communities, nitrate removal function and greenhouse gas emissions at a constructed stormwater wetland. Corey presented work on salinization impacts on historically freshwater microbial denitrifiers. Brian's poster focused on using high resolution water quality monitoring to better understand nutrient dynamics in the field. It was a productive (and fun) time talking with folks working on NC water issues ... and added bonus - I got to see the Nile Project concert!!!
Undergrad Corey Forbes recognized for the ECU Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities award that supported his undergrad research project ... and in other news AP received the 2017 Coastal Maritime Council Coastal Scholar Award (pictured with collab Dr. Jake Hochard - Dept. of Econ and Institute for Coastal Science and Policy and University Scholar (photo credit: Kayla Clark).
